Etymology

The term spread on X during early 2026 (although isolated usage dates back earlier). It gained viral popularity on August 10, 2026 after U.S. congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez quoted New York City Council member Chi Ossé during an interview with ABC News, who tweeted in May 2026 that "Woke 1 was crazyyyy". The spelling with 1.0 alludes to the software development industry, where 1.0 represents the first official release of a product.

Meanings

1. (US, neologism) An era of U.S. history extending from around 2014 to 2024 (the re-election of Donald Trump), during which notions of social justice, identity politics, and liberal-oriented cancel culture are supposed to have been culturally dominant.
   • Please stop treating transwoman as innocent woobies who can never say problematic shit. Genuinely it's straight up fucking infantilizing and I'm sick of it.
