From Latin Taurī, from Ancient Greek Ταῦροι (Taûroi).

Meanings

1. (historical, plural, plural-only) An ancient people who inhabited the Crimean Mountains.
   • Who these Tauri were is a question of some difficulty. Strabo calls them a Scythian people, but Herodotus clearly distinguishes the Tauri from the Scythians, as being a different nation. 1850, Charles Anthon, “Chersonēsus Taurica”, in A System of Ancient and Mediæval Geography for the Use of Schools and Colleges, page 238:
