Meanings

1. (uncountable) A maqam in Persian music.
   • We notice a preference for melodies based upon the Makams that were related to the modes of the Synagogue, such as Bayati and Nawa, corresponding to the Prophetic, Mogen-Ovos, and Lamentations modes; for Siga and Irak, which correspond to the Pentateuch, Ruth, and Tefilla modes; for Hedjaz, which corresponds to the Ahavoh-Rabboh mode; and for Rehaw, which resembles the Job mode. 1929, Abraham Zevi Idelsohn, Jewish Music: Its Historical Development, page 364:
