Calque of Persian وز قدس coined in 1979 in opposition to Jerusalem Day, from Arabic الْقُدْس (al-Quds, “Jerusalem, 'the Holiness'”), shortened from earlier مَدِينَة الْقُدْس (Madīnat al-Quds, “Jerusalem, 'City of Holiness'”), q.v.
