From the Hanyu Pinyin romanization of the Mandarin pronunciation of Chinese 清明 (Qīngmíng, literally “Pure & Bright”).

Meanings

1. The first day of the fifth solar term in the traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar, the 15th day after the Spring equinox (April 4 or 5).
2. (China) Synonym of Tomb Sweeping Day, a Chinese holiday observed on that day.
