Etymology
From Latin Nīcaea, from Ancient Greek Νίκαια (Níkaia), from νίκη (níkē, “victory”) + -ια (-ia, “-ia”, suffix forming feminine names). The city in Turkey was named for Nicaea wife of Lysimachus. The city in France was named in honour of a victory by Greek colonists over the neighbouring Ligurians. Doublet of Iznik and Nice.
