Etymology

From New + York. The name was chosen in honor of James, Duke of York, the original proprietor of the Province of New York.

Meanings

1. The largest city in the state of New York, and the largest city in the United States, a metropolis extending into neighboring New Jersey in addition to Pennsylvania and Connecticut.
   • After a passing driver yelled at Aisha Lbhalla to “not blow up a building” and another man made obscene gestures and tailgated her on the way home, Lbhalla organized the self-defense class in Tennessee. 2. A state of the United States.

   • The capital of New York State is Albany, not New York City.
3. New York County, a county of New York, coterminous with the Borough of Manhattan.
