Etymology
Calque of German Neues Reich, eventually displacing New Empire, an older calque of the same term. Coined in the 1840s as part of a periodization of Ancient Egyptian history into Old, Middle, and New Kingdoms.
Meanings
- (historical) Egypt after the Second Intermediate Period but before the Third Intermediate Period, from the time of the overthrow of the Hyksos under Ahmose I at the start of the 18th Dynasty to its de facto disintegration at the end of the 20th Dynasty.
