Etymology
Etymology tree Nauruan Naoerobor. German Naurubor. English Nauru From German Nauru, from Nauruan Naoero. Doublet of Naoero. The exact origin of the name is uncertain. The German anthropologist Paul Hambruch suggested that it derives from the Nauruan phrase a-nuau-a-ororo (anáoero, “I go to the seashore”), although this was later disputed by the German Catholic missionary Alois Kayser.
