Named after Spanish Queen Mariana of Austria (1634–1696).

1. An archipelago in the western Pacific Ocean, a part of the geographical Micronesia.
   • After refueling and taking on supplies in New Guinea, we steamed north and east to support the landings on Kwajalein and Eniwetok and the thrusts against the island of Truk.
