Borrowed from Japanese 国後 (Kunashiri) or Russian Кунаши́р (Kunašír). Ultimately from Ainu クンネ シㇼ (kunne sir), meaning "black island"; or Ainu キナ シㇼ (kina sir), meaning "grass island".
