1. (neologism, uncountable) The highly transmissible XBB.1.5 strain of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19. A subvariant of the Omicron variant (“B.1.1.529”). Kraken became the predominant strain in the United States at the end of 2022.
