Etymology

From Classical Mongolian ᠬᠠᠨᠪᠠᠯᠢᠺ (qanbalik), from Middle Mongol ᠬᠠᠨᠪᠠᠯᠢᠺ (qanbalik, “City of the Khan”), from ᠬᠠᠭᠠᠨ (qaɣan) + ᠪᠠᠯᠢᠺ (balik), both possibly from Old Turkic. Compare Mongolian Ханбалиг (Xanbalig).

Meanings

(historical) The capital of the Mongolian Yuan dynasty, at the site of present-day Beijing.
- Genghis Khan initiated Beijing's nearly 800-year dominance over the Middle Kingdom.
