(historical) A short-lived sister republic of revolutionary France that existed between 1798 and 1803, encompassing most of present-day Switzerland, excluding the cantons of Geneva, Neuchâtel, and parts of Basel.
The Helvetic Republic, as the Swiss version was called, introduced the latest achievements of the French Revolution: equality before the law, uniformity of weights and measures, and a uniform code of justice. It liberated large tracts of subject territory in Ticino, Vaud, Aargau and Thurgau and raised former subjects to the dignity of citizens.
