Etymology
In reference to West Africa, a calque of Portuguese Costa do Ouro, named for the export of gold from Ghana's Ashanti Region. In reference to Australia, originally an informal modification of the region's former name South Coast (from its location relative to Brisbane) owing to its relatively high prices during the 1940s and 1950s.
