Personally, I think they sound like a-holes. All fandoms and communities have them. I don't know much about species crossing, but I do know that dutchies have specific-ish guidelines to making one. If you keep getting hate or have people telling you that you can't use your fursona, look into making it it's^([sic]) own species.
