Borrowed from Greek δημοτική (γλώσσα) (dimotikí (glóssa), “[language] of the people”).

Meanings

1. Demotic Greek.
   • In 1903, when a translation of the Bible appeared in Dhimotikí, this actually resulted in public riots, led by indignant supporters of Katharévousa, and the deaths of eight people in the rioting in Athens. 2019, Language and Society, Andrew Simpson, Oxford University Press, p. 116
