(historical) A city or town that is a member of the Cinque Ports confederation.
In the time of Edward I., when the Cinque Ports and their members were required to provide, equip, man, and maintain ships for the King's service, with twenty men to each ship, the quota of New Romney, a principal Cinque Port, was four ships; of Hastings, another Cinque Port, three ships; of Rye, one of the “ancient towns” that ranked as a Cinque Port, five ships; whereas Lydd, only a “member,” was required to turn out seven ships.
