From Italian Carolina or its etymon Latin Carolīna, from Carolus (“Charles”) + -īna (feminine diminutive suffix). By surface analysis, Carol (male given name) + -ina (feminine diminutive suffix). Doublet of Caroline. The U.S. states are named for Charles I of England.
