Etymology
broad + peak. From having a broad appearance. Calque of German Breithorn, from breit (“broad”)+Horn (“peak, prominence, summit”). Named after Breithorn, the mountain in the Swiss Alps. Coined by British explorer Martin Conway in 1892.
Meanings
- A mountain of the Gasherbrum, Karakoram; on the Pakistan-China border between Baltistan, Gilgit-Baltistan and Xinjiang. The 12th highest mountain in the world, an eight-thousander.
