From Barau (“a surname”) + petrel, after French agricultural engineer and ornithologist Armand Barau.

Meanings

1. A medium-sized gadfly petrel, Pterodroma baraui.
   • Feral cats living near colonies preyed mostly on Barau's Petrels, killing >900 birds annually (58% adults, 42% fledglings) in 2 studied colonies (Faulquier et al. 2009); such predation, particularly of adults, is not sustainable in a normally long-lived species, and could lead to extinction within 100 years (Russell et al. 2009). 2013, Roger Safford, Frank Hawkins, The Birds of Africa, volume VIII, The Malagasy Region, page 141:
