Etymology
Determinativkompositum, zusammengesetzt aus dem gebundenen Lexem trypto- (aus Trypsin), und dem Suffix -phan, aus griechisch φαίνω (phainō^☆) ^(→ grc) „-sichtbar machen“, „-zeigen“, „-ans Licht bringen“. R. Neumeister hatte im Jahr 1890 aus Proteinen und einem Enzym namens Trypsin ein Abbauprodukt erhalten, welches er Tryptophan nannte.
